Light up the Night!

We were fortunate enough to be at the mountains for "Light up the night" at Scenic World where Katoomba Falls is lit up.

So much fun for the kids with a disco skyway, a silent nightclub and kids carnival rides including teacups.  We went for a walk to the base of the waterfall along well lit boardwalks.

There is still time to visit "Light Up the Night" as it goes until the 30th April.

The following day we woke early to head to Scenic World again as we were eager to see what we could see in the daylight.

The excitement in the kids was amazing - they stepped onto the front carriage of the world's steepest railway and they wanted the incline to be on the "cliffhanger" setting - so of course my heart leapt a beat but we reclined the seat and enjoyed the ride up and down.

The walk at the bottom of the railway was amazing as we walked through tropical rainforrests and saw the old coal mine and the original scenic railway.

We also enjoyed the skyline in the daytime - where we overlooked the Jamison Valley and enjoyed views of the three sisters and the waterfall that we had seen during the night. It looked so different during the day,

The kids were fascinated by the glass bottom when they could look straight down on the valley. They did this twice as they enjoyed this so much. They could have kept riding all day.

The children were ages 5, 8, 10 and 17 and they all enjoyed the experience in different ways which was perfect for a spread of ages.

Exhausted after a big day of walking and riding we enjoyed a big bowl of hot chips from the caffeteria before our drive back to Sydney.

ABC Reading Eggs can travel!

We moved to New Zealand for a few years and I needed something to help my kids with their reading. Two of my kids were struggling and really starting to resent reading time, so I knew had to change something. I did not know how to help my three girls with their reading as much as I would have liked to, as I am not a teacher.

We are now back in Australia. My six-year-old has completed the Fast Phonics program and it has really helped her progress with figuring words out. All three girls have come back into the Australian schools as competent readers for their age - thank you ABC Reading Eggs!

Being able to have access for up to 4 kids on one subscription is great, as I was able to have all three of my girls set up. I loved the portability of ABC Reading Eggs as we could use this on long car trips, on different devices, in Covid-19 lockdowns, on holidays and even in different countries! My sister is a school teacher and she supported my use of this program as a fantastic way to teach kids to read. Now we are back in Australia the older girls' school classes are using the ABC Reading Eggspress program for their comprehension tasks. My Kindergarten girl uses ABC Reading Eggs and Mathseeds in class and for homework which made the transition much easier. There is a great selection of books and readers to read as well - which is especially useful for my kinder girl.

I would encourage you to take advantage of the exclusive 35% discount offer for existing customers on your 12‑month subscription by clicking  here

Don’t miss your last chance to claim this special Back‑to‑School offer from ABC Reading Eggs. Give your child all the skills they need for reading success. Sign up for 30-days FREE access to Australia’s leading online reading program for kids!

Here is some information that could assist you in learning more about the program.

The Unauthorized Harry Experience

A Parody by Dan and Jeff

All Seven Harry Potter Books in Seventy Hilarious Minutes

"The duo casts the perfect spell over the audience." The New York Times – Critics’ Pick

"Gloriously irreverent." Time Out London – Critics’ Choice

"I guarantee you’ll go positively potty over Potted Potter." Toronto Star

"A fabulously funny parody." The Daily Telegraph (UK)

2021 marks the 15th Anniversary of the international smash hit Harry Potter parody POTTED POTTER.  In celebrating this milestone, producers have confirmed that Australia will score a global exclusive with a five-city tour of this blissfully funny romp through J.K. Rowling’s back catalogue live on stage.  The 2021 Anniversary tour will open in Sydney on 22 June, then travel to Canberra on 13 July, Adelaide 27 July, Brisbane 3 August and Perth on 11 August.

POTTED POTTER has been performed hilariously “across the ditch” by two New Zealand actors Adam Brown and Tama Jarman who will bring the brilliant Centrepoint Theatre production to Oz following an acclaimed premiere there last year. This was directed by the show’s co-creator Daniel Clarkson and was praised by the NZ Herald for its “terrific, fun, slick performances”.

POTTED POTTER – The Unauthorized Harry Experience – A Parody by Dan and Jeff takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing all seven Harry Potter books (and a real-life game of Quidditch) into seventy hilarious minutes. Even if you don’t know the difference between a horcrux and a Hufflepuff, this fantastically funny show that features all your favourite characters, a special appearance from a fire-breathing dragon, endless costumes, brilliant songs, ridiculous props and a generous helping of Hogwarts magic will make you roar with laughter.

“Blissfully funny, a winner in every way. This show is a crowd-pleaser.” The London Guardian

“Cleverly appeals to both ardent fans and parents.” The London Times

TV Reno queen Alisa Fraser on mum guilt and how she rode out the COVID storm

The past nine years have been a whirlwind for TV reno queen Alisa Fraser. For starters there’s been her star turn on The Block: Sky High and The Block: Fans vs Faves alongside her twin sister Lysandra, the day to day running of their interiors business, and the launch of their successful hand and body lotion business - al.ive body - during the pandemic which went gangbusters. Somehow, she’s also managed to raise two boys Nate, 9, and Dash, 5, in her hometown of Adelaide. The sisters have now just released a new product - al.ive body baby - aimed at toddler and babies which features a hair/ body wash, body lotion and nappy cream.

“We are so excited to launch al.ive body baby because as mums, we found it was a constant challenge to find personal care products for little ones which are gentle on the skin, made of natural ingredients and free from harsh chemicals,” explained Alisa. Here she tells us more about her boys, mum guilt and working with her sister.

Do you wish that the skin lotions and washes you’re now putting out for toddlers were around when your boys were little?

I do, particularly as Nate has sensitive skin. He has outbreaks of dermatitis and at one point was just having hot baths with no kind of soap or lotion at all. He’s been using al.ive body wash which is naturally derived, vegan, free of artificial fragrances and are also free from added chemicals such as parabens and sulphates. However, he is growing out of it and has had no reaction to our products at all which is really gratifying.

Was it scary launching a new business during COVID?

Yes, it was a risk. With the country going into COVID lockdown and uncertainty, people questioned the timing of our start-up launch. However, we were confident we had the right product at the right time, given it was body washes and hand sanitisers! It’s been a crazy ride with lessons learnt long the way, but it’s done extremely well.

Your youngest Dash just started school this year – how are you finding it?

Personally, I’m loving it! I’ve had kids at home in some form for the past nine years, so I'm not going to lie, I feel like a new and very productive woman. It took him a few weeks to settle in and now he’s got a heap of friends. Although, I am sure when things at work settle down a little, I am going to yearn for them to be back at home.

How do the boys get along?

They get along pretty well. Nate is a shy, quiet observer whose level headed. Whereas Dash is just full of life, headstrong and really sassy! He’s also quite the smooth talker - he tells me every day that I’m beautiful!

What kind of a mum are you and do you ever get mum guilt?

I’m no nonsense – I don’t mollycoddle the boys! I’m also not really an arts and crafts type mum – I’d rather have a hit of tennis or kick of the footy with them. The mum guilt is very real. I’m always saying "quick quick quick" or "hurry" because there are a million things on the go at one time and I always feel such little time to get everything done. I definitely do feel guilty about never having enough quality one-on-one time with them, but I think most working mums probably feel that way. I also struggle with never having enough time to myself either, I can't tell you the last time that I watched tv, sat down and ate lunch in peace and quiet.

How do you manage the juggle?

Juggling running two businesses, kids, a hubby, and afterschool sport each night can at times be manic - well it's manic every day really! That’s why it’s so important to me that weekends are for family time. The weekdays may as well be a write-off but I truly treasure the weekends where I can switch off and spend time as a family.

What’s been the hardest part about parenting so far?

Probably since around the time Dash was about two years old, because I have been running two businesses whilst being a mum to two kids. It’s been a lot easier this year now that they’re both at school. I am really career driven and an entrepreneurial high achiever, but then again, I also want to be there for my kids. It’s such a juggling act but I try not to put too much pressure on myself as feeling guilty is counterproductive and really doesn’t change anything. My kids get to grow up in an environment where they see how hard you have to work for your dreams to become a reality and hopefully that rubs off on them later in life.

You and your sister have four boys between you – did you ever want a daughter?

Yes! My boys and Lysandra’s boys Emerson, 11, and Cohen, 9, all have so much fun together. However, there’s always going to be that little hole inside which gets to me when I see little girls in nail salons with their mums. Also, when boys get older their wives take over and the mother-in-law gets kicked to the side haha! Although, not always the case, I’d be lying if I said that doesn’t scare the bejesus out of me lol …

What are your best hacks for mum stress?

It’s so important that women make time for themselves as mums – it’s something that I struggle to find the time to do. I’m trying to find that time for myself as well as having date nights and fun nights out with your girlfriends.

How do you and Lysandra work together?

We can raise our voices a fair bit and are very blunt – there’s no beating around the bush. Sometimes there are arguments, but then we just move on. You can do that with sisters, with other people it may end the friendship! Having said this, I wouldn’t want to work with anyone else as we know we always have each other’s back.

Sand free beach towels

Wet. Heavy. Sandy. Those three words define the regular beach towel.  Tesalate are the experts in textile innovation. The Absorblite™ fabric tech is engineered to revolutionize the beach towel as you know it.

I was fotunate enough to review a Tesalate towel and I loved it so much that I also bought another one. They are not that cheap but definately worth it. Sand free towels are a must for the beach.

My only problem was choosing the design as I loved them all.

Sand free - just shake off the sand - it is so easy.

One of the towels I chose was the Bora Bora - a towel for 2 - the size of a picnic rug. The size is perfect.

The other design I chose was  The Alchemist.

I love the size it folds down to as well - I can't believe how small a picnic sized towel folds to.

Now they're labelled and they always come home.

Top 10 Things You Need To Label For School

Top 10 Things You Need To Label For School

School… Oh to be back there knowing what I know now! Packed lunches, hanging out with friends all day, playing in the sun & just having the time of my life. Unfortunately, though, my days of Mum packing my lunch are long gone and now it’s my turn to be head chef, taxi driver, counsellor, cleaner & cheer squad for my own boys. It can be tough but I’m loving every minute of it.

The thing is though, I always thought that once I became a mum I’d just magically evolve into this organised better version of myself. That I’d never forget a Mufti Day, I’d always bake for the cupcake stall, and I’d certainly never be late picking the kids up from school. But that was not to be.

It took me some time to work out how to best navigate the Back To School rush each year, but after replacing 5 school jackets, 10 hats, 657 pencils & more lunch containers than I can count, I’ve learned my lesson about labelling… If it leaves the house with either of my children it gets labelled… every. single. thing!

Last year was the first year that I didn’t have to replace anything. I must have saved close to $500 just by making sure everything was labelled before it went to school with the boys. On top of that, the kids didn’t have to face me to tell me they’d lost another $70 jacket which I’m sure was a huge load of their minds too. Here are the labels I used, they’re the best!

So what exactly do I label? EVERYTHING! But… there are 10 things that I think every parent should always ensure they label.

1. Uniforms

Iron on labels have been an absolute lifesaver for me. I’ve labelled the boys’ jackets, shirts, shorts & pants & they’ve not lost a thing since. The labels from Bright Star Kids are super easy to apply & they stay stuck. I wouldn’t do a school year without them again, they’ve saved me a fortune.

2. Shoes

I’m certain most people will think I’m crazy, but as I said… I label everything & Shoes are no exception to the rule. The shoe label goes on the inside of the shoe so that it’s easy for the kids to see which shoes are theirs. I imagine having their shoes labelled is a huge help for their teachers too when it comes time to remove their shoes in class. I can’t imagine trying to help 30 kids all find their correct shoes & put them back on.

3. Socks

Even socks can’t escape my wrath. Bright Star Kids’ Iron on sock dots are amazing. They’re the perfect size for socks big & small & they guarantee that my sons don’t pick up other kids’ socks at the playground.

4. Hats

I’m never replacing a lost hat ever again thanks to these labels. Hats are not cheap and labelling them has meant that even if they end up in the lost property box we’re able to identify that it belongs to the boys. The other thing about labelling hats is that it stops kids from accidentally picking up their friend’s hat and possibly coming in contact with head lice. Seriously… label your hats, you’ll thank me later!

5. Stationery

With a class of 30 kids, it is expected that on occasion there might be some stationery mix ups. My kids get this awesome personalised pencil case and I fill it with everything they’ll need for the whole year. Before I hand it over to them though, I label every pencil, every marker, the sharpener, the ruler, they eraser… you get it! Even if they lend their stationery to a friend in class it always comes back now & again, I’m saving money

6. Drink Bottles

With lots of mums buying their kids’ school supplies from the same places, it’s not difficult to imagine that there might be a few hundred of the exact same drink bottle floating around your kids’ school. If you label it, you’ll know it’s theirs… if you don’t, and they lose it you’ll likely be stuck buying another one, and again next term & every term after that. Before you know it, that bargain $10 drink bottle has become a $100 drink bottle. I’ve done this myself so last year I bought the boys a personalised drink bottle. They’re brilliant & they’ll be able to use the same bottles again this year, definitely worth the $30 I spent.

7. Containers

Never again will I let the kids leave the house with my prized tupperware without labelling it. Bright Star Kids’ labels are 100% waterproof & scratch proof. They can go in the dishwasher & microwave, and they save you a fortune in replacing lost containers. They’re super easy to apply & they stay stuck. If you’re tired of replacing containers, you’ve got to get yourself some of these.

8. Books

This one seems to speak for itself. Obviously you’re going to label your kids’ exercise books! While that’s an important task, I’m talking about labelling Story Books. My son’s have the opportunity to bring a book to school every few weeks for storytime & being a big book lover, I want to be sure they come back. I get these labels for their books so that there’s no mistaking who each book belongs to.

9. Bag

If you’re not buying a personalised backpack for your kids you’re going to want to make sure you label it. For me, I love a good quality bag tag. I like that the boys can spot their bag quickly in the afternoons so that we can escape the school pick up rush. Much like the drink bottle situation, it’s highly likely that there will be kids at school with the same backpack, so to avoid any confusion, add a bag tag to the top handle. It’s that easy!

10. Devices

If your kiddo is expected to bring a device to school you’d have to be a little bit crazy to not label it! One of my sons is allowed to bring an iPad to school & I labelled the iPad bag with my iron on labels, the cable is labelled & so too are his earphones. For his iPad I used these extra large labels & the label has lasted a whole year so far.

That’s it!

But don’t forget… you’re going to need a whole lot more than just 10 labels! If you want to label everything with labels that actually stay stuck, you have to invest in Bright Star Kids’ labels, they’re absolutely phenomenal. Don’t forget to let us know how you go labelling this year & how much money you’ve saved now that you don’t have to keep replacing lost stuff.

Whitehaven Beach Cruise

"Pristine, pure, perfect – the silica sand here is dazzlingly white, washed in on the tide over thousands of years. Located on the largest island in The Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach offers up 7km of shore to explore – swim, snorkel, laze on the sand or even take a hike through the forest to an ocean lookout or secret swimming spot: your time here can be as energetic or relaxed as you’d like it to be. Don’t miss the walk to the spectacular viewpoint over Hill Inlet at Whitehaven’s northern end, where a swirl of white sand and turquoise water fuse to create a stunning blend of colours." From Cruise Whitesunday's Website.

We loved our cruise with Whitsunday Cruises. The scenic cruise out let us see Hamilton Island from different directions, we loved the scenic trip to Whitehaven Beach.

We enjoyed morning tea of muffins and fruit and tea and coffee onboard the boat. We then went ashore on a transport barge which took us to shore. We took part in fish feeding, wrote our names on the beach and put on our stinger suits where we discovered a fringing reef which was spectacular.

A lovely morning at Whitehaven Beach and lots of happy memories.

Turtle Discovery Catseye Beach

We recently went to Hamilton Island and we were fortunate to see and see a whole variety of marine life - including turtles, on a Turtle Discovery tour.

My two eldest sons and myself put on our snorkles and went out with guides standing on paddle boards. The guides on paddleboards were spotting for turles and when they found them they signalled to us and we all hurried over.

The excitement we all felt when we spotted our first turle was amazing as we hurried across to the next turtle that had been cited.

We saw 6 large turtles which made for a fantastic tour.

We saw some coral formations and tropical fish and colourful coral structures which I was not expecting to see off Hamilton Island's Catseye Beach. I enjoyed this so much we didn't go out to the outer reef as we just enjoyed the snokelling at Catseye Beach.

It was 2011 and I took my kids then 10 and 6 to Jamberoo Action Park. The kids loved it then and have asked for years to go back - today 8 years later we will take my 5 year old, 13 year old and 18 year old and with excitement we return.

4 Top Tips For Easy Family Travel

Travelling with your kids is one of the best gifts you can give them.  Experiencing new places and creating memories during the quality family time spent together is invaluable. The benefits of travel to children’s learning and development are also an added bonus. But let’s face it, travel, especially long distance with kids can be tough and if the thought of it alone makes your stress-levels rise, then you will be pleased to know about these helpful travel tips and handy items to make it easier.

Keeping kids comfortable is vital to successful travel, especially on long-haul flights, which can be a nightmare if you don’t have a way of letting your child stretch out and lay flat for some sleep. Luckily there is a practical and affordable product available to help. The inflatable travel “Kooshions” from Kooshy Kids are absolute lifesavers when travelling on planes with kids. Little kids and big kids alike will love being able to put their feet up and relax (or even lay down for a sleep onboard!). Easily inflating between two plane seats, the durable Kooshion provides a flat, flexible and comfortable space. Don’t attempt air travel with young kids without one!

There is no doubt that Ipads and Tablets are great for keeping kids entertained, with the ability to pre-download their favourite shows, movies, e-books and games before travelling so they can watch them mid-flight.  The Netflix app in particular is great with the ability to download shows before travelling and watch them even with no Wi-Fi connection. Wireless headband type headphones like Kontraband, are great for little heads and are a more comfortable option when watching shows during travel.

If you’re looking for some alternate entertainment that engages kids creative minds and gives them a nice break from a screen there are some great travel friendly activity kits and games out there. Look for compact and portable sized activities that encourage independent play such as magnetic games, drawing and colouring books with pencils, stickers, puzzles and cards. Providing children with activities that foster creative play helps develop their imagination and fine motor skills as well as keep their little hands and minds busy.Avoid taking toys with small parts as they can easily get lost under and in-between seats.

As every parent knows, kids can get cranky when they are hungry so snacks and water really are essentials when you’re travelling as a family.

So its best to pack some snacks in your bag to have readily available, take something healthy as well as their favourites, or surprise them with something new. Snacks are also a good way to pass some time and keep kids quiet.

Also remember to encourage your kids to drink lots water and walk around the plane at regular intervals.

Travelling with a backpack style nappy bag instead of the traditional over the shoulder bag is far more convenient and comfortable when you’re with the kids. It means your hands are free to hold the essentials, such as your child’s hand and your families’ passports when in transit, whilst you carry everything you need for the journey comfortably on you back. A backpack such as the Kooshy Kids On-The-Go Parent Backpack, can be both a stylish and practical option easily holding all of you and your child’s necessities.

So go on, select your dream place to travel with the family, book the flights and rest easy knowing that you can have a stress free travel experience with your kids!
